Northern Goshawk Looking

Northern Goshawk Looking
Acrylic Ink on 2" Gesso Board
by Roderick MacIver

Unframed Original (30" x 30") $1400

Limited Edition Print

Dear Heron Dancers,

The stars seem close tonight
Closer than my neighbors
Closer than the town
Five miles down the road.

Snowshoeing at night
In winter woods
The way lit by moonlight.

Down to the beaver flow
Down to the gurgle where black water
Forces its way up through clear ice.

To listen for a few minutes
To the winter woods
There is nothing much to hear.

Maybe I go so that
When I return to cabin and woodstove
I appreciate them more.

It is so still out here
So still, so quiet, so white, so blue.

Owl and Moon

In celebration of the Great Dance of Life,

Roderick W. MacIver

About This Week’s Painting
When I started Northern Goshawk Looking, I planned to do a semi-abstract painting much in the style of Coastal Cougar, but with a blue background. As I painted, I got more and more into a realistic representation, inspired by the Goshawk’s interesting facial patterns and powerful gaze.

*Owl and Moon, above, is available as a limited edition print.

The Laws of Nature:
Excerpts from the Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson

Oxbow River

Ralph Waldo Emerson was among the first to incorporate the importance of wild nature into his worldview, and was instrumental in the founding of Transcendentalism. Heron Dance has collected excerpts from his writings, gleaned from personal journals as well as published works to provide a glimpse into the wild soul and brilliant mind whose work has affected our perception of the natural world in many subtle ways.

Nature is a mutable cloud which is always and never the same. She casts the same thoughts into troops of forms, as a poet makes twenty fables with one moral. Beautifully shines a spirit through the bruteness and toughness of matter.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, excerpted from The Laws of Nature.

It is a certain faeryland where we live. You may walk out in any direction over the Earth’s surface, lifting your horizon, and everywhere your path, climbing the convexity of the globe, leads you between Heaven and Earth, not away from the light of the sun and stars and the habitations of men. I wonder that I ever get five miles on my way, the walk is so crowded with events and phenomena. How many questions there are which I have not put to its inhabitants.

— Henry David Thoreau, excerpted in Issue 56
