Heron Dance tries to use recycled paper all the time, but sometimes it isn’t practical. When recycled paper has to be trucked or shipped long distances, we feel that making a donation directly to the purchase and protection of wilderness makes more sense. We take the money we save by not shipping paper around the country or the globe and donate it to The Split Rock Wildway, a project of the Northeast Wilderness Trust. In 2006 Heron Dance donated $4,800. In 2007, Heron Dance experienced a financial loss, and was unable to donate cash but did donate notecards, art and calendars to wilderness protection groups.
The Split Rock Wildway project is accumulating forest land between the Split Rock Wild Forest along Lake Champlain in the Adirondacks and the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains. The land is then protected from development, and the wildlife from hunting. The purpose is to allow animals a corridor between these two large wilderness areas, and thus help facilitate stable genetic connections.
