Artist’s Notes: Dragonfly
Dragonflies, like butterflies, are symbols of metamorphosis, of the process of becoming, of blossoming from within of self-blessing. There are other symbols of course of this difficult process. Galway Kinnell, in his very beautiful poem, Saint Francis and the Sow, uses the metaphor of a flower bud.
stands for all things,
even for those things that don’t flower,
for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;
though sometimes it is necessary
to reteach a thing its loveliness,
to put a hand on its brow
of the flower
and retell it in words and in touch
it is lovely
until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;
- Galway Kinnell, from Saint Francis and the Sow
I did this painting about twelve years ago. I remember trying for a few days to get it right without much success and then late one night, after a little too much wine, I got exactly what I was trying for. That doesn’t happen often, most of my paintings, even ones that are the favorites of others or myself end up much different than my original vision.
